This Paleolithic graphic was used to support one of the first known commercial messages found anywhere. Adorning a wall of the Altamira Caves in Spain, this 32,000 year-old depiction is likely an ad from ancient horse wranglers to other cave dwellers touting the advantages of domesticating this wonderfully useful beast. Language being what it was at the time, grunting out strange- beast- with- agreeable-disposition- roaming- the- savannah- on four- legs- with- long- tail- eating-grass- for- sale-or- lease seemed cumbersome. Working under the assumption that a picture is worth a thousand words, they offered this graphic representation instead. We think these Paleolithic communicators were on to something. Several epochs later, symbolism is still a very useful device. Graphics are very important in our business. In art and illustration, layout and design, and computer special effects, quality graphics can make a point and support a message in print, video, on the web, in the ballroom, on the expo floor, or in the marketplace. |
